Tellico Plains, TN KOA

We are staying at this park as I write this, and I want to share this "secret".
I am not usually a fan of KOA, but this park is very nice. It is located at the edge of Cherokee National Forest, on the Tellico River. The park has all facilities, including free WIFI, and the people running it are very nice. The site is lovely, though not shaded as the trees are still fairly small.
The Cherohala Skyway, a mini-Blue Ridge Parkway, starts about a block away. Color is now peaking and it's a beautiful drive over to Robbinsville, NC. Five miles from here, River Rd branches off the Skyway and gives you 18 miles along the prettiest river with numerous waterfalls, even in the current drought.
Folks who want to go to Great Smoky Mountain NP but can't get a reservation would do well to consider this place.
My photo gallery (link below) has been updated to include our recent Tennessee touring.

RE: Leaf color

We also have spectacular fall colors in southern Utah. On October 7 we took a drive from Cedar City east on UT-14 to Kolob Road to Miners Peak Road. The fall colors (aspen and maple) on Kolob Road were the best they have been in years. Returned to UT-14 and proceeded on east to Duck Creek. Again fall color was spectacular. From Duck Creek took Mammoth Creek Road to UT-143 and Parowan. Color at Brian Head (snow on the ground) was mostly gone, but the views on the way up and down were impressive. It was a beautiful clear day with only a slight haze.
Would love to be in Utah for autumn once again, not to mention Colorado. Maybe next year.

RE: Leaf color

I'm in Tellico Plains, TN right now, and the colors are getting really good up high. It may be a week or so from peak, probably longer in Pine Mountain.

RE: RV Park close to Greenville, SC

Last April, I gave up on RV parks in Greenville and went to Paris Mountain SP. They have a few sites to handle big rigs and full hook-ups.

RE: ca was super, on to nv and az

After Grand Canyon, Page, AZ has so many natural attractions you could stay there for weeks. Then there is Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Capitol Reef NP, Arches NP and Canyonlands NP...all in Utah.

RE: a beeping we can't figure out where it's coming from

Our cat kept coming into the bedroom, Meowing like something was bothering her. For a long time, we couldn't figure it out. Finally, after several days, we heard the very high pitched sound from the smoke detector. She could hear it much better than we could, because of the high frequency, I suppose. The battery wasn't dead, but wasn't making good contact. Our cat is much happier now.

Waterfalls - GSMNP

Can anyone give us a report on the level of water in the waterfalls of the Great Smokey Mountain NP?

RE: NY to Grand Canyon - Do I need the Dingy?

Like most others, I've done it without a toad, but never would again. There's just too much that can't be done in a MH, or can't be done without a lot of trouble.

I believe I have stayed in that site, and the beach/water is directly behind it. No trees in between.

RE: CAN CA. BEAT OREGON ?

CA has much to offer, but you probably can't see it all in one trip. I would swing through Yosemite Valley, cross Tioga Pass, spend some time around Mono Lake, Bodie (ghost town), and lots of places in the Eastern Sierras. If you choose to go down the coast, either in lieu of or after YNP, the coast highway is fabulous (but scary for some). There are several missions worth seeing, and the Hearst mansion is one-of-a-kind. If you go south on route 395 from Lee Vining, do not miss Death Valley. It is the perfect time of year for it, and it is unique.

RE: BEST NATIONAL PARK?

National Parks are a lot like sex...the worst I ever had was wonderful. The best I ever had was the most recent. And I never get tired of going back again.

RE: Fuel Shortage

Not sure about Pine Mountain, but we just came through central GA and into AL and north to Fort Payne. We have seen some stations with no gas near the interstate. The small towns have no problems with shortages. From all I hear, the big problem is around Atlanta.

Are any Flagstaff campgrounds open during that time? The ones I've used close for the winter.

RE: Smoky Mountain National Park

Some people would go south on I-95 to Washington, DC. If you want to tour DC, that's fine, it's a great city to visit. On the other hand, if I were going I would get on I-78 and go west to I-81 near Fredericksburg, PA. Get off I-81 before Knoxville and into Gatlinburg. This will avoid much traffic and frayed nerves that I-95 seems to always have. The mileage is about the same.

RE: Everglades question

The Shark Valley Loop is well worth doing. It is a 15 mile paved loop with an elevated overlook at about the half-way point. Gators all along the loop, but especially at the pond below the overlook. Other wildlife as well. They have a tram service, or you can take bicycles. Sometimes you have to shoo the gators off the trail.
Don't be surprised if you meet a mosquito or two in the park. They are just part of the wildlife.
